A Word In Edgewise, Inc. (AWIE) in Our Community
In 2012, AWIE will continue to offer financial support, and contribute items or services throughout the year, to local not-for-profits whose mission includes promoting acceptance, equality, safety or education for our youth.
- In 2011, AWIE we donated the time to create banner layouts for the Gay Mens Chorus Gay Fair on the Square event, and printed Post Cards for GLEAN, a service to elderly residents are given food surplus.
- AWIE has been a Portland Area Business Association (PABA) member for six years and Christopher Reed served for a time on their Board of Directors. We are also members of the Portland International District Business Association, our NE PDX Roseway neighborhood group.
- We also support HRC, BRO, Portland’s Q-Center, SMYRC, GLSEN, and Manifest Mens Wellness Community in an effort to offer everyone a safe, friendly community – and world – in which to live and thrive. We guarantee confidentiality – and respect – in all areas of business we conduct.
- in 2007, AWIE donated several days of video recording and editing for PRIDE NW. These videos can be viewed on YouTube. Just CLICK HERE.
- A Word In Edgewise produced several TV shows since 2001, working with local youth. We tutored over 70 teens (and even some preteens) in television production, journalistic writing, and on-air presentations. Our shows were produced at MetroEast Community Television. Teen Edition aired for 14 months on Comcast’s Portland, Oregon Cable Channel 14. These volunteer efforts led to some high end college scholarships and excellent employment opportunities for many of our young interns. Our son, Austin Reed is now the morning news anchor and producer at KOBI-5 in Medford, Oregon. To view some samples of what we did, CLICK HERE.
- Christopher H. Reed, CEO, sat for five years on the Board of Directors with the Oregon Holocaust Resource Center (OHRC). The OHRC is an educational institution focusing on teaching lessons from the Holocaust and applying those lessons to middle and high school students in Oregon and Southwest Washington. In addition, the OHRC is the steward for the Oregon Holocaust Memorial in Washington Park, Portland, Oregon. One of the few Memorials to recognize all victims of the Holocaust, including, priests, Gypsies, handicapped, Russian POWs, and those in the homosexual community, this Memorial is truly connected to our community.
- AWIE produced and donated a Virtual Tour of the Memorial, available for viewing on their site. In Addition, we designed, hosted and maintained the OHRC Web sites as a community service for several years. If you have a group of five or more individuals, the OHRC can arrange to have a docent give a guided tour of the Memorial. If you would like a personal tour, call Chris directly at 503.282.8787 to arrange it.
- Chris Reed also volunteered with Mothers Against Drunk Driving (MADD Multnomah / Hood River, Oregon Counties) for five years, lending his media skills to that organization and served as a MADD Oregon State Representative for one year.
