A Word In Edgewise, Inc. (AWIE) was founded in January, 1990, in Asheville, North Carolina. What began as a Data Entry firm, moved on to Graphic Design, then to Print, Video Production & Editing and Tape Transfers to CD/DVD. We continue to conduct business with most of our original client base of national and international firms, in addition to our growing local Portland, OR / Vancouver, WA customer base after 13+ years in the Northwest.
When you buy through us, you buy American. We do our best to be a “Green” company. Paper stocks are manufactured by Ecologically Conscious Paper Manufacturers. Mohawk Mills, a primary AWIE supplier, generates 100% of its operating electricity from Wind Turbines. Further, the majority of stock we use is Verified Recycled. We shop Locally First for all our materials and supplies and NEVER outsource beyond U.S. borders. Offset jobs are run on Recycled Stock using Soy or Vegetable Inks exclusively.
Finally, we do our best to reduce waste in our local production. We get maximum print coverage on all our jobs. All waste is recycled on a weekly basis. Our recycle to trash ratio is 5:1. (Some weeks we don’t even have to empty our trash can!) Our electrical plugs which use power whether connected or not (such as phone chargers and other power convertors) are deliberately left unplugged when not in use. Our video equipment is used in a most efficient manner. Again, no “hidden power consumption” units are plugged in unless in use and we use low heat, low electricity, daylight fluorescent lighting in production.
A Word In Edgewise began video production in July, 2001, initially working with over 70 area teens and preteens, introducing them to the field of television production on local cable access channels at Metro East Community Television (known then as MCTV). Many have gone on to some of the finest colleges and universities in the country. Our son, Austin Reed, has a career in broadcasting and is now the AM Reporter for KOB in Albuquerque, NM.
Rose City News, a live news broadcast, ran consecutively for over five years every week. In addition, we produced Sports Extra, Rose City Hype, First Edition, and Teen Edition, a teen entertainment show, which aired on Comcast Cable Channel CNW14 for 14 months. Northwest Teen News aired on Comcast Channels 11 and 21, and Salem’s KWVT, channel 17 for over two years. Are You Fed Up? aired for seven years on MetroEast Community TV.
A Word In Edgewise recorded the dedication of the Oregon Holocaust Memorial, and a created a Virtual Tour of the Memorial, each of which is archived at the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum in Washington, D.C. In addition, several area Holocaust Survivors have been interviewed and those too, are archived at the USHMM.
We have videotaped and edited commercials, documentaries, sporting events, live concerts, travel videos, artistic performances, celebrity interviews, Pride NW, and more.
During video shoots, we strive to make everyone feel comfortable and relaxed. We spend time to make the set and lighting right for the shoot, and our editing focus is to make everyone look and sound their best.
We are conveniently located in NE Portland at 4008 NE 73rd Avenue, North of Sandy Boulevard / Fremont Street. Our office hours are Monday through Thursday 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. Pacific Coast Time. We are available at other times by appointment.
